What I do...
I am a Sr. UNIX Systems Engineer, Systems Administrator, and Security Specialist by vocation. I'm also a dyed-in-the-wool Linux enthusiast by avocation, and the two areas of interest are beginning to cross paths more frequently than ever before.
Past employment includes years in the broadcast television post-production industry with independent post production houses as well as Manager of Computer Imaging with NBC, in Burbank, California. That was followed by a decade with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), which became part of Compaq in 1998, which became part of Hewlett-Packard in 2002... :} So, what goes around, comes around.
I've worked for Broadcast Television post-production houses (Compact Video, Vidtronics, Mobile Video, and Complete Post in Hollywood and Burbank. I've designed computerized videotape editing systems, and at NBC I bootstrapped the Computer Imaging department, called the Multiple Access Graphics Imaging Center, MAGIC, into existence. I've also written computer programs to automate the production of Television Game Shows (Scrabble, Super Password, Trivia Trap).
In my deep, dark past, I have spent six years in Army Intelligence (USASSG, ACSI, DA), and my decade-long tenure at DEC found me calling on DoD Intelligence accounts at GTE Government Systems and later at the Lockheed 'Skunk Works', TRW, and Hughes configuring high-end Alpha UNIX systems and networks for classified missions, and helping to port classified applications to UNIX on Alpha.
I have a special interest in the Internet and Computer Security, and maintain Linux firewall scripts which I make available on my website.
Hobbies include Amateur Radio, with a special interest in RTTY (radio teletype) transmission and equipment. I'm also an avid collector of Tektronix and Hewlett-Packard test instruments, oscilloscopes, and other vintage engineering gear. I'm getting re-interested in Photography with the introduction of new high-end Digital SLR cameras that rival film in image quality. I'm also an enthusiastic (and unfortunately, very messy) gourmet cook. You'll find my recipes and some that I've inherited from my Dad on my website.
